Why Supplements Are Necessary

Dietary supplements are subject of an on-going debate between health professionals and individuals alike. Some say they are necessary, some think they’re a waste of money. Personally, I used to believe they were a waste until one day I started on a health kick. I began researching everything I could and changing my diet. I then started my first attempt in the health industry and literally tried every single product on the market to compare the results with my then company.

Doing this, I discovered supplements are both necessary and a waste. Wait…what? How can they be both necessary and a waste? The supplements you find in supermarkets are largely a waste. The lower the cost, the bigger the waste. Why? Most brands are riding the ever-growing industry for profits. They don’t care about us, the consumers. They only care about their bottom line. So the supplements they put out are ill-formulated, and largely compiled with synthetic nutrients. This is a waste of your money because our bodies can’t use what it doesn’t recognize. It also can’t absorb what it can’t break-down. This is why supplements, most brands anyway, are a waste of your money.

However, supplements are necessary. Between repeated use of the same soil over extended periods of time, use of pesticides and insecticides, and genetically modified seeds, our soil isn’t as nutrient rich as it was for our ancestors. Yes, some nutrition is still there. Yes, eating non-GMO and organic will provide better nutrition then the GMO and chemical sprayed counterparts. But you’re only getting enough nutrition to survive.

Think of plants. You plant a garden. With proper amounts of water, it will grow and survive. But if you feed it with organic fertilizer, it will thrive. Our bodies are no different. The plant is getting the same nutrition out of the soil as our fruits and vegetables are. So, if the plant is barely surviving on it’s own and truly thrives with added nutrients fed to it, why would we be any different.

To make up for the lack of nutrition, and to truly allow our bodies to thrive – function in peak performance, fight off illness, prevent diseases – we need to supplement our diets. But if supplements are a waste, how do we supplement our diets?

Above I stated most brands are a waste, not all. If you know what you’re looking for in a supplement, you’ll be able to pick out a supplement that is worth it and beneficial to your health. When looking at supplements, you want the supplements to be organic or non-GMO sourced. You also want the supplement to be micronized. This ensures that the supplement is natural, not synthetic, and is formulated to guarantee maximum absorption. This is especially important if you’re diabetic, as diabetics have a hard time absorbing different nutrients.

I’m a big believer in switching to an all non-GMO and organic diet, which you can do gradually, and using top quality non-GMO sourced supplements. However, the reality is most don’t eat non-GMO or organic, come up with excuses about why they can’t make even a gradual switch, and most people consume fast food and other over-processed foods. These foods are largely nutrient deficient, and will therefore leave you nutrient deficient. The rise of certain illnesses can be directly matched to the rise of nutritionally-deficient meals as part of our diet. Supplements are important with a non-GMO and organic diet, but moreso with a nutritionally deficient diet. In many cases, illnesses, lack of energy, lack of proper sleep, obesity, susceptability to flu and cold is all due to a nutritionally deficient diet. Without proper nutrition, your body simply can’t function properly and will begin to breakdown.

As we get older, we also absorb less nutrients that we take in. This is why many elderly people are malnourished, not because of a poor diet but because of malabsorption. We were designed for survival of the species, nothing more. Around the 20’s to 30’s we all start aging and our bodies begin to breakdown. Because by the time we reach that age, we have already established a diet and eating habits, we don’t see the harm in it. So we don’t change our diet. However, the vast majority of us will see a decline in our endurance, flexibility, and over-all ability to do what we once could. And this is brushed off as “getting old”.

Meanwhile, there are individuals in their 80’s and 90’s that are just as fit and healthy as they were in their 20’s. Unlike the rest of us at that age, they’re enjoying life without unnecessarily prescribed pharmaceuticals for illnesses and symptoms that were self-inflicted due to a lifetime of nutrition-deficient diets.

In a perfect world, we could live as our ancestors did an get all the nutrients we need to function at peak performance from our diet. But, the reality is we don’t. We live in a world where foods are treated with chemicals, there are less amounts of diverse strains, there are toxins in the air, our soil and water isn’t as nutrient-rich as it once was. The best thing you can do for your health is convert to a non-GMO and organic diet and supplement it with non-GMO sourced, micronized supplements.
